Instagram Plus: Is it worth it for small businesses?

Instagram has always been free and that's been part of its appeal.

It is a level playing field where a local florist could, in theory, reach as many people as a national chain if the content was good enough.

So when Meta rolled out Instagram Plus at $3.99/month (roughly £3.20), it's worth asking: is this an upgrade for small businesses, or are we just paying for features that should have been free all along?

Having tested it ourselves, here's our take.

What is Instagram Plus?

The headline features that matter most for small businesses are:

  • Extended and spotlighted Stories.

Your Stories now live for 48 hours instead of 24 and you can spotlight one per week to appear first in your followers' trays. For a small business that doesn't post daily, this alone has practical value - a Saturday morning Story about your weekend menu or a flash sale no longer disappears before your Monday-morning audience usually wakes up.

  • Unlimited custom audience lists.

Beyond the standard Close Friends, you can now create multiple segmented lists. A café could have one list for regulars, one for event attendees, another for wholesale clients. This is meaningful audience management that previously required workarounds or third-party tools.

  • Pin up to six posts.

The standard limit is three. If you're a business with seasonal services, multiple product lines or a portfolio to show, this extra real estate on your profile is useful.

  • Direct-to-profile posting.

You can add content to your profile or highlights without it appearing in the main feed. This is one of the more underrated features - keep your curated feed without losing the content.

  • Story rewatch counts and preview without registering a view.

Knowing how many times someone has rewatched a Story is a real signal. If people are rewatching your product demo or your tutorial, you know you're onto something. The stealth preview feature is a nice bonus for competitor research.

The Visibility Question of Instagram Plus (and the catch)

Custom bio fonts and Super Hearts (animated reactions to Stories) are the flashiest features, and they do make a profile stand out - for now. But here's the reality: these are differentiation features that erode over time.

If Instagram Plus stays niche, a tool used by a small percentage of active accounts, a distinctive bio font signals investment and professionalism. If adoption becomes widespread, it becomes noise. The same thing happened with Instagram's blue verification tick and before that with Facebook's business pages when they first launched.

The question isn't whether these features work today. The question is whether you are building a sustainable content strategy or just renting a head start that fades over time.

Where the Instagram Plus Value Is Clearest

For small businesses, the strongest case for Instagram Plus comes down to three scenarios:

  1. You are active on Stories

If Stories are part of your regular content rhythm (and they should be) the 48-hour extension, spotlight feature and audience segmentation represent a meaningful upgrade to how your content reaches people.

  2. You have a segmented customer base

A personal trainer with beginner and advanced clients, a boutique with a loyalty customer group, a B2B service with distinct client types.

Unlimited audience lists let you tailor messaging in a way that previously required separate accounts or clunky workarounds.

  3. You're building a content archive

The ability to pin six posts and add content directly to your profile without feed disruption is genuinely useful for businesses that want their profile to function as a landing page - always current and always curated.

Where Instagram Plus Harder to Justify

If you're a small business that posts inconsistently, hasn't fully committed to Stories or is still finding your voice on Instagram, Instagram Plus is unlikely to move the needle. The features are only as powerful as the content strategy behind them.

The monetisation features - ad revenue splits, tipping, digital product sales - are more relevant to creators and influencers than to most local or service-based small businesses. Don't let these inflate your perception of the value.

Instagram Plus: The Verdict

At £3.20/month (or $3.99), Instagram Plus is not a significant financial ask. But the question for small businesses isn't whether it's affordable - it's whether it's the right place to invest attention and budget.

Our take: it is worth it if you're already committed to Instagram as a primary channel and you're consistent with Stories.

The extended Story window, audience segmentation and analytics depth offer tangible improvements to what active accounts can do. For businesses posting sporadically or still testing the waters, the free version remains perfectly capable.

The visibility advantages of the cosmetic features - the fonts, the reactions - are real but temporary. Build your strategy on the features that compound over time: better audience targeting, richer analytics and smarter content distribution. These are the things that will still be paying off when everyone else has caught up.
